Bakkhali is a place to slow down. These are the experiences that make the most of a short stay. Some depend on tides, weather and local rules, so treat them as possibilities, not promises.

Walk the beach at low tide

The flat sand between Bakkhali and Fraserganj is at its widest at low tide. Keep an eye on the incoming tide, which advances quickly over a flat beach.

Watch the evening light

The last hour of daylight turns the wet sand into a mirror. Cloud and haze, especially in the monsoon, can hide the sun.

Meet the red crabs

On Henry's Island and quieter stretches of beach, red crabs dash across the sand. Move slowly, stay still and they will reappear.

Visit the fishing harbour

Fraserganj's government fishing harbour is busiest early in the morning, when catches are landed and sorted. Ask before photographing people at work.

Eat fresh seafood

Coastal Bengali cooking means fish curry, prawns and crab with rice. Where seafood is priced by weight, agree the price before it is cooked.

Take a boat past Jambudwip

Boats from Fraserganj circle Jambudwip when the sea is calm. Landing is not allowed. Wear a life jacket and skip the trip in rough weather.
