Henry's Island lies near Bakkhali, around 130 km from Kolkata. For many visitors it is the most memorable part of the trip: greener and quieter than the main beach, with the feel of the Sundarbans close at hand.

The way in

The approach passes under trees whose branches meet overhead, forming a natural tunnel that photographers love. Beyond it, wooden bridges and walkways cross the mangrove creeks.

The watchtower

A watchtower rises above the trees, with views over the mangroves towards the sea. Go up early or late in the day when the light is softer.

Red crabs on the beach

The beach at Henry's Island is known for its red crabs. They race across the wet sand and vanish into burrows at the slightest vibration, so walk slowly and keep still if you want to watch them.

Before you go

  • Entry arrangements, fees and timings can change. Check locally.
  • Carry water and mosquito repellent; there is little shade on the beach.
  • Don't chase or pick up the crabs, and leave no litter behind.
