Jambudwip is an isolated island in the Bay of Bengal, about 8 km south-west of Fraserganj and Bakkhali. It is uninhabited except during the fishing season, between October and February.
Fishermen have long used the island because it is close to the fishing grounds, has a natural creek where boats can shelter, and once offered drinking water. Fish-drying and other non-forest activities on the island are restricted under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980.
Can you visit?
Tourists are not allowed to land on Jambudwip, and stopping on the island is illegal. Small boats from Fraserganj take visitors around the island without stopping. Whether such trips run on a given day depends on the weather, the sea and local rules.
- Use only boats that carry life jackets, and wear one.
- Do not go out in rough weather, in the monsoon, or when warnings are in force.
- Agree the route, duration and fare before boarding.
